Semtech Proof-of-Concept Kits

The Semtech Smart Building and Asset Tracking Kits have been designed so that the value provided by LoRaWAN® in the smart building and asset tracking spaces can be easily validated by customers who need to quickly demonstrate the value of Internet of Things (IoT) solutions in these verticals.

Semtech’s Smart Building Kit is designed to enable smart building owners to gain real-time insights into building operations. The kit accelerates the development of smart building solutions using LoRa® devices and the LoRaWAN protocol, and can facilitate a portable demonstration of one such solution to a wide range of stakeholders, while providing validation of network coverage within the building where you choose to deploy the kit.

Using off-the-shelf hardware available from a variety of suppliers, the Asset Tracking Kit enables you to determine a LoRa-based gateway’s range of coverage by moving sensors from one location to another whilst visualizing them in a map on a cloud dashboard.

While both of these kits are very easy to use and demonstrate, we realize that our customers have a wide variety of deployment options when looking at LoRa-based solutions, one of those being the Cloud. With this in mind, we are proud to introduce, in conjunction with Amazon Web Services (AWS) and TensorIoT, a variant of these kits that takes advantage of AWS IoT services.

The AWS Cloud-based Kits

In moving from proof-of-concept, to pilot, to deployment, there can be many challenges; for example, scalability is often times be a big concern. One method of mitigating this is by building “serverless” Cloud applications that our customers can use to scale easily, without having to worry about managing the underlying compute/storage/network by outsourcing this underlying work to serverless services from AWS.

These new AWS kit variations take advantage of this fact by building out the entire solution upon the AWS IoT stack.

The new Cloud dashboards are designed to be serverless from the ground up, relying on native AWS services such as AWS IoT Core, AWS IoT Core Rules Engine, AWS IoT Gateway, AWS Lambda, AWS IoT Device Shadow. These kits will provide:

  • Parity that is both functionally and visually equivalent to the existing Semtech Asset Tracking and Smart Building Kits, while taking full advantage of the AWS Cloud architecture underneath
  • Dashboards built on AWS that are open-sourced and can be completely customizable
  • Functionality allowing you to scale easily, from taking the Cloud dashboard “as-is” from proof-of-concept, to pilot, to production as the underlying infrastructure is “outsourced” to AWS
  • With serverless, you pay for only what you use which scales up when you add more sensors to your fleet and scales down if your fleet size reduces

Being built natively on AWS allows you to take what is deployed in these demo kits and use it in your AWS development environment; you can take the code and modify it to fit your needs.

Kit Choices

In the end, it’s all about giving you more choices. You can use the existing kits to show quick proofs of concept, or choose the AWS variant if you want to take full advantage of the AWS Cloud services. In both instances, you’ll get an easy-to-deploy, easy-to-use, out-of-the-box solution to show how both smart buildings and asset tracking will work with LoRa-based devices in your organization. The choice is yours!
